Holocaust Day inspires Grantham art installation
South Kesteven District Council is planning a special art installation in Grantham to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
80 Candles for 80 Years will feature 80 lanterns installed on St Peters Green in Grantham on 27 January - Holocaust Memorial Day.
Grantham Arts and Wellbeing has been commissioned by SKDC to deliver the project.
Individuals or groups are being invited to ten drop-in open workshops in Grantham Museum to help create individual lanterns/light holders with each one having a unique identity.
The workshops start on 7 January, and run through to 23 January from 10am – 12.30 pm.
The installation will be further complemented by an exhibition of photographs taken in modern-day Auschwitz by artist Anne-Marie Kerr. These will be on show in the Guildhall Arts Centre
The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is asking communities across the globe to participate to learn more about the Holocaust in the Auschwitz concentration camp liberation anniversary year.
Cllr Rhea Rayside, SKDC Cabinet member for people and Communities, said.
“This 80th commemoration of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau should give us all pause for thought on what happened during the Holocaust.
“It’s vital that we remember the legacy of those that were murdered as man’s inhumanity to man, and challenge those who discriminate against or persecute others today. “
It’s estimated that more than one million people perished in Auschwitz with the majority being Jewish. The second largest group was Polish and then Black, Roma or Sinti people.
